In a recent incident, Kim Young-bae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, referred to the upcoming by-election for the mayor of Geumjeong-gu, Busan, as a waste of taxpayers’ money. However, after facing criticism from the leader of the main opposition People Power Party, Han Dong-hoon, for insulting the deceased former mayor and his family, Kim issued an apology. The controversy arose when Kim posted on Facebook expressing support for Kim Kyung-ji, the Democratic Party candidate for the election, and questioning whether people would vote for the People Power Party again, despite their role in causing the by-election and wasting public funds.
The son of the late former mayor, Kim Jae-yoon, strongly condemned Kim Young-bae’s comments, emphasizing the respect owed to his father and family. Both the People Power Party and its spokesperson criticized Kim Young-bae’s remarks, urging for more civil discourse in politics. In response, Kim Young-bae took down his post and issued a sincere apology, acknowledging his lack of prudence and vowing to improve his communication in the future.
