Israel has seized land in Jerusalem where the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, is based, intending to construct 1,440 settlement units. This move follows the approval of bills by the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee to end Unrwa’s activities and privileges in Israel.
Furthermore, a law aimed at restricting Unrwa’s operations has been cautioned against by members of the United Nations Security Council. Washington’s UN envoy also expressed concerns that the bill may impede communication with Israeli officials and eliminate privileges for UN organizations worldwide.
In response to allegations linking Unrwa staff to Hamas, several countries halted funding in January but resumed after a UN report found no evidence supporting the claims. The US remains a holdout in funding the organization.
Algeria, a member of the Security Council, emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of Palestinian refugees symbolized by Unrwa. The ongoing battle over Unrwa’s future highlights the complexities and tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
