Zelensky Seeks European Backing at Balkan Summit

President Zelensky of Ukraine is urging the European Union to unite in the face of Russian aggression. A crucial meeting with international allies was delayed due to US President Biden’s focus on Hurricane Milton. Zelensky emphasized the need for Europe’s democratic nations to integrate and support Ukraine’s entry into the EU. Leaders from various Balkan states attended the summit in Dubrovnik to discuss peace efforts and cooperation towards European integration and NATO membership.

Zelensky is seeking more military aid to counter Russia’s advances and is pushing for clearance to use long-range weapons from allies. The joint summit declaration is expected to condemn Russian aggression and support Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Zelensky’s hectic schedule includes meetings with Pope Francis, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Croatia, a key supporter of Ukraine, has disagreements within its government over military aid. President Milanovic’s refusal to send Croatian officers to train Ukrainian soldiers has sparked a debate in the country. Despite the challenges, Zelensky remains determined to secure international support for Ukraine in the face of ongoing conflict and uncertainty.
