Why does Malawi strongly support Israel?

In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Malawi officially opened its embassy in Israel, showcasing its unwavering support for the country. Despite facing criticism at home, the Malawian government stands firm in its decision, citing Israel’s longstanding support since Malawi’s independence in 1964.

While initially planning to open the embassy in Jerusalem, President Lazarus Chakwera faced pushback and had to change course. Malawi’s close relationship with Israel also extends to labor agreements, with thousands of Malawians working under harsh conditions on Israeli farms.

However, this support for Israel has sparked controversy within Malawi, with voices calling for a reassessment of the country’s foreign policy. Critics allege that Malawi’s stance is influenced by Western powers, jeopardizing the nation’s values and integrity.

Despite the backlash, Malawian Foreign Minister Nancy Tembo maintains that the country’s support for Israel is unwavering and not influenced by foreign powers. The situation has raised concerns about Malawi’s ability to assert its sovereignty and make independent decisions.
