A Ukrainian court has sentenced two members of the Russian FSB hacker group “Armageddon” in absentia for carrying out over 5,000 cyberattacks against Ukrainian institutions and critical infrastructure. These hackers, previously SBU employees in Crimea, voluntarily joined the FSB after Russia’s annexation in 2014. Their attacks targeted various ministries, gaining access to sensitive government documents and classified data. The hackers were charged with treason and unlawful breach of computer systems, receiving a 15-year prison sentence, commencing upon their capture.
The sentencing comes amidst warnings from Ukrainian and Western intelligence agencies about ongoing cyberattacks by Russian entities. GRU Unit 29155 and five Russian intelligence officers were charged with attempted attacks on Ukraine and NATO countries. In a retaliatory move, Ukrainian hackers launched a cyberattack on Russian state media on Putin’s birthday.
The relentless cyber warfare highlights the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia in the digital realm. Stay updated on the latest developments in this high-stakes cyber battle.
