New Delhi CNN — A man in India has been charged with the rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata, sparking widespread protests against gender violence in the country.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleges that the man, a civic volunteer with Kolkata police, assaulted the female doctor while she was asleep at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Charged under Indian laws related to rape and murder, the man was arrested shortly after the crime, backed by CCTV footage and DNA evidence.
Protests and strikes
The incident led to nationwide protests by doctors demanding justice and improved safety measures for women, especially healthcare workers.
Junior doctors in Kolkata initiated strikes, calling for enhanced security in hospitals and a crackdown on corruption in the healthcare sector.
Despite legal reforms, India still faces a high number of rape cases each year, with many incidents going unreported due to social stigma and slow judicial processes.
