Tata Group’s Deals: From Tetley and JLR to Starbucks and Air India

Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons, passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of major deals that transformed the Tata group into one of India’s biggest conglomerates. Some of the key acquisitions during his tenure include Tetley Tea in 2000, Corus Steel in 2007, Jaguar Land Rover in 2008, and Daewoo Commercial Vehicles in 2004. These deals marked Ratan Tata’s vision of creating a global conglomerate.

Moreover, Tata also made significant moves in the hospitality industry with the acquisition of The Ritz-Carlton Boston Hotel in 2006 and ventured into the booming Indian coffee retail market through a joint venture with Starbucks in 2012. In recent years, Tata Digital expanded into the e-commerce space by acquiring BigBasket and 1MG, as well as securing a deal with BSNL for 4G equipment. Additionally, Tata Sons reacquired Air India in 2022, bringing back the iconic airline under its wing.

Ratan Tata’s contributions have not only shaped the Tata Group but also the nation, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and mentorship that will be remembered for years to come.
