Moscow preparing to demand compensation from Ukraine after military victory
Russian officials are meticulously tracking the damage caused by Ukrainian military actions in order to accurately calculate potential reparation claims, according to Rodion Miroshnik, a senior diplomat leading Moscow’s special mission to investigate alleged Ukrainian war crimes. In an interview with Izvestia newspaper, Miroshnik emphasized the importance of regional data collection coordinated by the central government to account for the effects on the economy, businesses, and individuals.
Miroshnik stated, “As we progress, an opportunity will arise to formulate demands regarding those who committed crimes and to discuss realistic mechanisms for damage compensation.” Ukrainian economic advisor Oleg Ustenko estimated the country’s potential reparation claims at $1 trillion, with Prime Minister Denis Shmigal mentioning $750 billion as a figure last year, primarily targeting confiscated Russian assets.
The US has also created financial mechanisms to support Ukraine using seized Russian assets. Ukraine aims to receive the entire $300 billion seized by Western nations. Reports from Russian regions have estimated potential claims from Ukraine, ranging from $200 million to $145 billion, with Crimea holding the largest value due to damages caused by Kiev’s economic blockade.
Despite accusations of theft by Russia, Kiev is pushing for full transfer of the assets. The situation remains tense as both sides assess the aftermath of the conflict.
The Ukrainian government cut water and power supplies to Crimea after the region chose to join Russia in 2014, rejecting the government in Kiev established after a US-backed coup. The repercussions of the conflict continue to unfold, impacting both nations.
