Rwanda Aims for 36% Increase in Pork Production

Rwanda has set an ambitious goal to increase its pork production by 36% over the next five years, aiming to raise output from 22,839 tons in 2023 to 31,144 tons by 2029. The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Board (RAB) has revealed these targets to the local media, with a focus on modernizing the pig farming industry.

The country has already made progress with 65% of pig farmers adopting artificial insemination technology. The government invests about 150 million Rwandan francs annually in modernization efforts, reflecting a commitment to growth. While the pig population has decreased slightly due to a shift from traditional to modern farming practices, the overall trend points towards efficiency and expansion.

In 2024, Rwanda inaugurated modern pig abattoirs across the country, with the capacity to process up to 50 pigs daily. The total investment in these facilities amounts to approximately 1.3 billion Rwandan francs ($960,000), showcasing the growth of the pork sector in recent years.

Rwanda’s Growing Pork Industry

From a national pig herd doubling from 684,708 in 2010 to 1,498,721 in 2022 to increased meat exports reaching $22.3 million in the 2022/23 period, Rwanda is positioning itself as a significant player in the pork industry. Expansion plans also include exploring markets in North America and Europe while ensuring sustainable practices and benefits for small-scale farmers.

With strategic planning and continued investment, Rwanda’s pork sector is on track for further growth in the coming years.
