Russian Scientists Dish Up Post-Op Nutrition Solution to Help Cancer Patients Recover

Researchers from Russia’s Saratov State Medical University have developed a therapeutic diet that supports cancer patients’ recovery after surgery. The study, presented at the Week of Russian Science, showed that specialized nutritional mixtures, called “sippings,” improved patients’ quality of life and reduced treatment costs.
In cases of genitourinary cancer, over 80% of patients experience nutritional deficiencies, which the researchers addressed with these balanced mixtures. The study involved 30 patients with different cancers, and those who received the sippings experienced a 50% reduction in postoperative complications, improved wound healing, and decreased hospital stays.
According to Inna Simakova, director of Healthy Nutrition Technologies at SGMU, patients who didn’t receive sippings had higher incidences of gastrointestinal issues. The research aims to expand the product’s applications and study its effects on different patient groups.
The study is part of the Adaptive Food Industry for Health Design project within the Priority 2030 program.
