The President of South Korea, Yoon Suk-yeol, is scheduled to hold a summit with Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, during the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit in Laos on 10-11. The President’s office announced that he will also engage in bilateral talks with leaders from Japan, Canada, Australia, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. Yoon Suk-yeol traveled to Laos after concluding his state visit to Singapore to participate in the ASEAN Summit.
The summit between President Yoon and Prime Minister Kishida is expected to focus on deepening relations between the two countries ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year, as well as discussing trilateral cooperation involving the U.S. Both leaders previously had a phone conversation where they expressed their shared belief that the upcoming milestone would serve as an opportunity to further strengthen the South Korea-Japan relationship.
