North Korea Announces Strong Defense Response to US-South Korean Military Drills
In response to joint military exercises between Seoul and US forces, North Korea has announced plans to cut off all roads and railways to South Korea. The North Korean military will also fortify defense structures along the border to “completely separate” the two territories, as announced by the general staff of the North Korean People’s Army.
Pyongyang described South Korea as its “primary hostile state and invariable principal enemy,” justifying the decision as a “self-defensive measure for inhibiting war and defending the security of the DPRK.” The move comes after recent military exercises by Seoul near the North Korean border and visits by US strategic nuclear assets to the region.
Seoul, on the other hand, has not detected any construction work by North Korea near the border but has warned that it will not overlook any actions that unilaterally change the status quo. The responsibility for any resulting situations from the construction, Seoul says, will lie with Pyongyang.
North Korea has also reached out to the US military in South Korea to prevent any “misjudgment and accidental conflict” over the fortification project, emphasizing its commitment to defending its territory.
