Ethiopia’s New President Taye Astke Selassie Promises Peace and Diplomacy

Ethiopia’s former foreign minister, Taye Astke Selassie, has been sworn in as the new president of Ethiopia in a largely ceremonial role. The prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, holds the majority of the political power in the country.

President Taye, a seasoned diplomat with experience in the United Nations and Egypt, is seen as a close ally of Prime Minister Abiy. With a focus on building sustainable peace and upholding the rule of law, Taye aims to play a crucial role in quelling violence in the conflict-ridden Horn of Africa nation.

Furthermore, Taye emphasized the government’s readiness for dialogue and highlighted the importance of protecting the constitutional system. He also pledged to actively engage in peace and security efforts in the region, particularly in Sudan.

Replacing the trailblazing Sahle-Work Zewde, Ethiopia’s first female president, Taye vows to steer the country towards economic growth, reduce poverty, and promote equality among its citizens. With a rich background in diplomacy, Taye’s presidency marks a new chapter in Ethiopia’s journey towards stability and progress.
