The UK government is set to introduce a landmark employment rights bill that will create a Fair Work Agency to target rogue employers and enforce stronger protections for workers. The bill, described as a “watershed moment” by deputy prime minister Angela Rayner, will overhaul workers’ rights with measures such as new penalties for breaches, inspection powers, and enhanced protection against unfair dismissal.
Key changes include ending zero-hours contracts (except by request), banning fire and rehire practices (with exceptions), and granting new rights to sick pay, paternity leave, and unpaid parental leave. Employers will be required to offer flexible working as the default, address gender pay gaps, and support employees through menopause.
While trade unions have praised the reforms as a “seismic shift,” small businesses have criticized the rushed implementation and potential impact on growth. The bill also includes measures to strengthen protections for pregnant women, repeal anti-union legislation, and introduce probation periods for lighter touch dismissals.
Overall, the bill aims to improve workplace conditions, boost productivity, and drive economic growth by prioritizing fair pay and secure employment for all workers.
