MP: Iran must develop nuclear weapons to strengthen its deterrent capabilities

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 9. Iranian MP Mohammad-Reza Sabbaghian emphasized the importance of strengthening Iran’s deterrent power in the face of escalating tensions in the region. He suggested that Iran should have the capability to produce atomic weapons for self-defense if deemed necessary by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Sabbaghian highlighted the need for Iran to assert its sovereignty in deciding its nuclear strategy and defense capabilities, without seeking permission from other countries. The Iranian parliament has requested a review of the country’s defense doctrine regarding the production of nuclear weapons.

Recent tensions between Iran and Israel have underscored the importance of Iran’s security measures. In response to the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018 and the reimposition of sanctions, Iran suspended additional steps and the Additional Protocol, leading to reduced monitoring capabilities by the IAEA.

As the region faces heightened uncertainties, Sabbaghian’s remarks shed light on Iran’s commitment to maintaining its national security and sovereignty.
