Mozambique recently held elections with 17 million voters participating in the process to elect their next leader and governing bodies. The country’s electoral law dictates the President is elected for a five-year term by universal suffrage. The ruling Frelimo party’s nominee, Daniel Chapo, is the front runner, while Ossufo Momade from the main opposition party Renamo is seen as the closest challenger. Lutero Simango and Venâncio Mondlane are also competing for the top seat.
The elections marked an important moment for Mozambique as it showcased the transition to a new leader following President Filipe Nyusi’s two five-year terms in office. International observers from the EU, CPLP, AU, and SADC monitored the process closely. With over 11,500 national observers and 412 international observers, the elections aimed to test the country’s transparency and credibility.
