Mozambique on edge as governing party poised to win election

In Mozambique, poverty is a pressing issue for the 35 million citizens, with about half of them registered to vote. The country also faces challenges from an Islamist insurgency that has displaced many and halted major gas projects.

The upcoming elections are crucial as citizens demand job creation and action over empty promises. While the ruling party, Frelimo, has a history of accusations of election rigging, the opposition party, Renamo, has struggled to gain significant support.

Newcomer Mondlane presents a challenge to both parties but may face difficulties in rural areas without the resources of established parties. Analysts predict Frelimo has a high chance of winning despite the new competition.

The election results will be counted after polls close, with the possibility of protests in case of a disputed outcome. However, some citizens express apathy towards the election process, feeling that nothing ever changes.
