Documenting Gaza: The Story of Motaz Azaiza
Last weekend in Brooklyn, Mona Miari and Zafer Tawil performed at an event honoring the acclaimed Palestinian photographer Motaz Azaiza. At just 25 years old, Azaiza gained international recognition for documenting the atrocities in Gaza during Israel’s brutal assault. Despite risking his life for 108 days, Azaiza’s work garnered over 17 million Instagram followers, making him one of the world’s most prominent photojournalists.
A global advocate for Gaza, Azaiza has been named “Man of the Year” by GQ Middle East and listed in Time‘s 100 most influential people of 2024. Nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, Azaiza is currently touring the U.S. with UNRWA USA, highlighting his work titled “Gaza Through My Lens.”
Azaiza’s photography captures the human side of Gaza, from the beauty of the land to the stark realities of war. His powerful images, like that of a young girl trapped under rubble after an Israeli airstrike, highlight the urgent need for global attention and support.
