Political leaders in Zeitz, Germany were shocked to discover that 10 Stolpersteine, or “stumbling blocks,” had been stolen. These small brass plates, created by artist Gunter Demnig, are placed in front of the former homes of Holocaust victims to honor their memory.
Although the memorials are generally welcomed in Germany, not all communities embrace them. The theft in Zeitz was condemned as “unforgivable and inexcusable” by County Governor Gütz Ulrich and seen as a political attack on democracy by Mayor Kathrin Weber.
The theft is believed to be politically motivated, in a town where the far-right AfD party has gained popularity. A memorial march is planned to raise awareness and funds to replace the stolen stones.
The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing importance of commemorating the victims of the Holocaust and standing against acts of hatred and intolerance in society.
