Lithuania has taken significant measures to strengthen its defense against potential threats from Russia by fortifying a bridge over the Nieman river that links it to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Defense Minister Laurynas Kasciunas announced the deployment of “dragons teeth” obstacles and the reinforcement of the structure with iron beams in a recent Facebook post.
The move comes in the wake of escalating tensions between Moscow and NATO, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Lithuania, a Baltic state bordering Belarus and Kaliningrad, is strategically positioned and at high risk in the event of a conflict.
In response to the growing concerns, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have agreed to build a Baltic defense line along the eastern border with Belarus and Russia. Lithuania’s unwavering support for Ukraine has also strained relations with Russia, as evidenced by recent incidents involving military goods being confiscated from trains traveling between Kaliningrad and Moscow.
As a nation with a history of Soviet occupation, Lithuania remains vigilant and proactive in safeguarding its sovereignty and supporting allies in the region.
