Iranian Supreme National Security Council Considers Revising Self-Defense Doctrine
The Supreme National Security Council of Iran is contemplating revising its self-defense doctrine in relation to the production of nuclear weapons. This proposal was brought forward by Hassan Ali Akhlaghi Amiri, a member of the Iranian parliament’s culture committee. A group of 39 deputies from the parliament have also expressed their concerns on this matter to the council.
Akhlaghi Amiri emphasized that Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s decree against possessing nuclear weapons is currently a cornerstone of Iran’s defense doctrine. However, there are calls for a review of the country’s overall defense strategy with hopes that any decision made would be in the best interest of Iran and its allies.
Recent tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Iran and Israel, have sparked discussions in Iran about potential responses. Additionally, the fallout from the US withdrawal from the Comprehensive Joint Plan of Action in 2018 has prompted Iran to pursue a strategic plan in the nuclear sector to counter sanctions, leading to a reduction in monitoring capabilities by the IAEA.
