Hezbollah agreed to ceasefire before Israel killed Nasrallah

Hezbollah has agreed to a ceasefire with Israel following the death of its leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli strike. The Lebanese government was informed of this decision on September 27, through parliament speaker Nabih Berri. Prime Minister Najib Mikati conveyed Hezbollah’s acceptance of an international ceasefire proposal during his presence at the U.N. General Assembly in New York. However, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared there would be no easing of the conflict until Israel’s northern border was secure, leading to a significant Israeli strike on south Beirut where Nasrallah was killed.

Since Nasrallah’s death, the Lebanese government has had no contact with Hezbollah. Despite this, the group’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, affirmed their support for ceasefire efforts led by Berri in Lebanon, separate from Gaza. Hezbollah had previously shown support for Hamas, leading to increased Israeli strikes on the group resulting in casualties and displacements in Lebanon.
