Port Harcourt Refinery Delay: Niger Delta Youth Network Demands Transparency and Accountability

By Luminous Jannamike

The Niger Delta Youth Network (NDYN) has voiced its frustration over the ongoing delays in fuel production at the Port Harcourt refinery, with six postponements occurring since December 2023. The refinery, capable of processing 210,000 barrels per day, was set to refine 60,000 barrels daily after an overhaul last year.

NDYN accuses the government of neglecting the region and potentially exploiting its crude oil resources. Spokesperson Dakuku Francis criticized the lack of transparency and accountability in the project, warning that plans to use the refinery as a blending company could harm the health and environment of the Niger Delta people.

The group demands a clear timeline for production commencement, explanations for delays, and fair treatment for regional oil producers. They stress the need for energy security and economic sovereignty, calling for engagement and updates to ease regional tensions. NDYN’s stance reflects a plea for honesty, fairness, and justice in the Niger Delta’s oil sector.
