Trevor Reed Sentenced in Absentia for Fighting as Mercenary in Ukraine
Former US Marine Trevor Reed, who was released from a Russian jail in a 2022 prisoner exchange, has been sentenced in absentia by a Moscow court for fighting as a mercenary for Kiev. Russia’s Investigative Committee announced the 14 and a half years sentence and placed Reed on the international wanted list. Reed voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a mercenary in July 2023, where he took part in combat operations against Russian forces in Donetsk People’s Republic.
Reed, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, was detained in Moscow in 2019 and found guilty of assault on police officers. He was released in 2022 in exchange for a Russian pilot held in a US prison. Washington has distanced itself from Reed’s activities in Ukraine, emphasizing they were not on behalf of the US government. Another American, Stephen Hubbard, was recently sentenced to six years for fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine.
