NATO is evolving into its “3.0” version, with a renewed focus on deterring threats, particularly from Russia, as stated by Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Originally established in 1949 during the Cold War to combat Soviet aggression, NATO is now redefining its purpose in response to the changing geopolitical landscape.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Finland shifted from neutrality to joining NATO in early 2023. The alliance is bolstering its defense capabilities and emphasizing the importance of collective security in the face of Eastern threats.
Under the leadership of new Secretary General Mark Rutte, NATO is prioritizing support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and democratic integrity. Finland has already provided significant military aid to Ukraine and will further contribute by hosting a tactical battlegroup and headquarters for NATO land operations.
The alliance recognizes the need to strengthen partnerships and expand defense spending to address global insecurities. As NATO enters this new phase, it remains committed to upholding its core values and ensuring the stability of the region.
