EU officials did not hold back in criticizing Hungarian leader Viktor Orban for his democratic backsliding and Russia-friendly stance on Ukraine during his address to the European Parliament. Orban, a close ally of President Putin, faces disagreements with the EU on various issues, including aid to Ukraine and the rule of law at home.
During his speech in Strasbourg, Orban emphasized the need for change in the EU, citing the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the migration crisis putting pressure on the Schengen open border system. Despite some applause from sympathetic members, there was a disruptive moment with the anti-fascist anthem “Bella Ciao”.
EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen strongly rebuked Orban for his approach to Ukraine and criticized his unconventional diplomatic efforts. She also condemned Hungary’s handling of migration issues and its visa scheme for Russian nationals. Mainstream EU politicians are holding Orban accountable, with funds frozen over rule-of-law concerns.
While Orban sees political shifts in his favor across Europe, the criticism from EU officials suggests a growing rift between Hungary and the bloc.
