The Hong Kong Bar Sector Calls for Changes to Boost Industry Revitalization

The Hong Kong Bar and Club Association is urging authorities to make significant changes to revitalize the industry in the face of residents traveling to mainland China for entertainment. Chairman Chin Chun-wing stated that all operators are in favor of scrapping the liquor tax, with over 90% supporting a postponement of the flavored cigarettes ban and an extension of MTR train service hours.

In a survey of 400 operators, it was revealed that government-led mega events have brought foot traffic to bars, but the outflow of money to China and emigration of higher-income individuals pose challenges to the industry.

With these proposed changes, the bar sector in Hong Kong is hopeful for a rejuvenation that will attract more business and keep locals spending in the city.
