Committee greenlights separate electricity multiplayer market – Business

The Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) has approved the establishment of an Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) to create a competitive multiplayer market for electricity generation and purchase. This move aims to reduce the government’s role as the sole purchaser of electricity, allowing consumers to choose from various suppliers.

According to experts, ISMO will connect buyers and sellers more effectively, leading to a more efficient and competitive market with lower prices in the long run. Ammar Khan, a professor at IBA Karachi, highlighted that ISMO will ensure stable power supply by balancing supply and demand in real-time operations.

This decision is expected to offer better deals to consumers as multiple electricity suppliers will compete, resulting in lower prices and improved efficiency. Consumers will have the flexibility to choose the supplier with the best rates, similar to selecting an internet or mobile phone plan.

Ultimately, ISMO will lead to reduced power losses, lower costs, and a more reliable energy supply for consumers. The introduction of ISMO marks a significant step towards a transparent and competitive electricity market in Pakistan.
