Namibia’s Devastating Drought Situation and Green Hydrogen Initiatives

DW: Your country, facing a severe drought, is struggling to provide water to its people due to the parched soil. President Nangolo Mbumba discusses the challenging situation and the effort to deliver water by trucks.

Mbumba: Namibia is leading in developing green hydrogen projects to combat climate change, such as the Hyphen Project with Germany. Critics of the project claim it may create environmental problems, but our commitment to decarbonize the world through sustainable energies is crucial.

The issue of reparations for the genocide during colonial times remains a topic of discussion with Germany. Mbumba emphasizes the need for acknowledgment, apology, and compensation for the atrocities committed.

In light of mining and exploration interests posing potential threats to communities, Mbumba reassures Namibians that strict environmental regulations are in place to safeguard their interests and ensure the responsible utilization of resources.

Namibia is on a path towards sustainable development, leveraging its resources and partnerships to address pressing challenges and create a prosperous future for all its citizens.
