Investigation Launched into Colombian President’s Campaign

The National Electoral Council (CNE) in Colombia has initiated an investigation into President Gustavo Petro’s 2022 election campaign for alleged financing violations. The CNE announced that several contributions and payments were omitted from authorities and the campaign, leading to serious irregularities. This investigation includes Petro, his campaign manager, and other members of the campaign, as well as the Colombia Humana and Patriotic Union (UP) party.

President Petro has denied the accusations, claiming they are part of a plot to remove him from office. The outcome of the CNE investigation cannot result in Petro’s removal, as that decision lies with the lower house of Congress. This move by the CNE has sparked outrage from Petro, who called it a “coup d’état” and has called for a “general mobilization” against the investigation.
