Choosing Between Popular Support and Financial Backing in Politics – The Guardian Nigeria News

The Decline of Political Party Funding: A Threat to Democracy

In recent times, the failure of party members to pay their annual dues and contribute to the funding of political parties has raised concerns. This lack of financial support is not only shifting power to deep-pocketed politicians but also eroding the internal democracy of political parties.

Historically, political parties relied on membership fees and monthly contributions for funding. However, The Guardian’s investigation has shown that this practice is no longer mandatory, weakening the parties’ role as democratic institutions and allowing wealthy politicians to dominate decision-making processes.

While parties like the AG and NPC collected monthly dues in the past, this tradition has faded. Today, parties like the APC and PDP rely on donations from aspirants and political appointees, sidelining the contributions of regular members.

The lack of transparency in party financing poses a threat to democracy as it allows for undue influence from wealthy individuals. It’s essential for members to pay their dues to ensure parties remain independent and accountable.
