Cameroon assures president is healthy despite prolonged absence

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya’s extended absence from public events has sparked speculations about his health. Despite missing several scheduled appearances, senior officials maintain that the 91-year-old leader is in “excellent” health. The head of Cameroon’s civil cabinet condemned rumors about Biya’s condition and whereabouts, stating that he is fulfilling his duties in Geneva.

Critics have long criticized Biya for his frequent trips overseas, particularly to Switzerland, where he reportedly spends a significant amount of time. Despite reports of his declining health, government spokesperson René Sadi dismissed them as mere speculation.

With 42 years in power, Biya is one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. Despite transitioning Cameroon to a multi-party system, his regime has been marred by corruption and a reversal of democratic gains, including the removal of presidential term limits in 2008. Additionally, the country is grappling with a secessionist war in the west that has claimed the lives of over 6,000 people.
