Call for Better Land Access to Empower Women in Nigeria

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Gender Equality Initiative recently called for improved access to agricultural land and resources for women through its HER+ initiative. This demand was emphasized during a high-level dialogue held in Abuja on October 9, 2024, focusing on addressing barriers faced by women in Nigeria’s agrifood sector.

The event brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, and academia to collaborate on innovative approaches recognizing women as crucial agents of change in agriculture. Jordan Kyle, lead for the HER+ Initiative’s voice work package, highlighted the importance of integrating women’s perspectives into agricultural policies. She emphasized the need for women to have a seat at the decision-making table to effectively address climate shocks that impact them differently.

During the dialogue, the Women Empowerment in Agrifood Governance (WEAGov) framework was discussed as a key strategy to increase women’s policy influence in Nigeria. Participants highlighted societal norms that restrict women’s effectiveness in the sector and advocated for research and policies that empower women economically and enhance their resilience in the face of climate change.

The dialogue concluded with a call for community dialogues, radio programs, and gender dialogues to raise awareness and promote discussions on improving women’s access to land and resources, ultimately working towards gender equality and empowerment in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
