Bolivia joins South Africa in ICJ genocide case vs Israel

Bolivia Joins South Africa’s Genocide Case Against Israel

Bolivia has officially become a part of South Africa’s ongoing genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The South American nation filed an application on Tuesday to intervene in the case, which accuses Israel of committing “genocidal acts” in its war on Gaza, violating the Genocide Convention.

Israel had been ordered by the ICJ in January to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza and allow UN-mandated investigators access to the enclave. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the ruling, calling it “outrageous” and vowed to continue the war. Amnesty International criticized Israel for not complying with the ICJ’s order.

With more countries like Colombia, Libya, Spain, Mexico, Palestine, Nicaragua, and Turkey joining the case, Bolivia argued in its ICJ submission that it has a responsibility to condemn the crime of genocide. The conflict in Gaza has resulted in over 42,000 deaths, with the majority being civilians, causing immense suffering for the people trapped in the besieged enclave.
