In a recent incident where Chinese nationals lost their lives in a terrorist attack in Karachi, it was revealed that they were in talks with government ministers to renegotiate terms for Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The Finance Minister, Muhammad Aurangzeb, highlighted this during a time when the Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, pledged full security for Chinese nationals in Pakistan.
The Finance Minister emphasized the importance of peaceful environments to attract foreign investment and prevent incidents like the 2014 PTI sit-in, which disrupted a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping. He also mentioned the staggering economic losses of Rs190 billion per day due to unrest caused by protests, affecting the social sector and daily wage earners significantly.
Prime Minister Shehbaz condemned the recent protests as a replica of the 2014 sit-in and vowed to prevent any disruptions during the upcoming visits of international delegations. However, a Finance Ministry clarification later stated that the Chinese engineers were not involved in IPP talks with the government.
It is essential for the government to ensure security and stability for both local and foreign individuals to foster economic growth and development in Pakistan.
