Army denies claims of presidential guard command change

The Truth Behind the Reports of Changes in South Sudan’s Tiger Division

In a recent statement, the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) debunked rumors circulating on social media regarding changes in leadership within the presidential guards unit, also known as the Tiger Division.

Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, the official spokesperson of the SSPDF, clarified that there have been no changes at the top command of the Tiger Division. Contrary to reports, Maj. Gen. Abraham Gum Makuac has not taken over from Maj Gen Lual Week Kuem.

Since his promotion in 2017, Maj Gen Lual Week Kuem has been serving as the commander of the presidential guards unit in Juba, tasked with protecting President Salva Kiir.

Gen. Koang emphasized the importance of relying on accurate sources of information rather than social media speculation. This denial comes amid President Salva Kiir’s recent dismissal of Gen. Akol Koor Kuc, sparking rumors of power struggles within South Sudan’s top security officials.
