During his state visit to Singapore, President Yoon Suk-yeol emphasized the importance of the “8·15 Unification Doctrine” in achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the Indo-Pacific region. Addressing the Singapore Lecture, President Yoon highlighted how the doctrine could contribute to peace and trust-building efforts once North Korea’s nuclear threat subsides. Despite criticisms suggesting the doctrine leans towards absorption unification, President Yoon clarified that it is about expanding freedom and democracy to North Korea through peaceful means.

Furthermore, President Yoon addressed questions about South Korea’s considerations in the US-China relationship, emphasizing a mutual pursuit of interests based on respect and international norms. The Singapore Lecture, hosted by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, regularly invites visiting dignitaries to share insights and engage in discussions.

President Yoon’s diplomatic engagements in Singapore underscore his commitment to promoting peace, democracy, and unification on the Korean Peninsula, as well as fostering positive relations in the Indo-Pacific region.
