The Ministry of National Defense has come under fire for distributing a monthly security publication, ‘JAYU,’ to frontline units that allegedly glorifies former President Lee Seung-man and contains unverified fake news. According to the data submitted by Rep. Boo Sang-chan of the Democratic Party to the Ministry on the distribution status of security publications, the Ministry distributed ‘JAYU,’ published by the Seoulan Peace Research Institute, to frontline units at a rate of 11,000 copies per month. The Ministry spent 1.023 billion won on purchasing ‘JAYU’ over the past three years.
The May issue of the publication contains content that denies the facts of Lee’s exile in Hawaii and other biased and distorted historical accounts. Rep. Boo criticized the Ministry for distributing such publications filled with historical distortions and errors, emphasizing the importance of disseminating objective and verified security materials. The controversy raises questions about whether defense officials or the records evaluation committee have actually reviewed the content before distribution.
