President Biden has postponed a special diplomatic event celebrating the centenary of Irish-American relations due to Hurricane Milton’s impending landfall in Florida. The event was set to include a meeting between President Biden and Taoiseach Simon Harris in the Oval office followed by a reception in the Rose Garden at the White House. However, the reception has been delayed while the meeting will still take place as planned.
The United States was the first country to recognize the Irish Free State in 1924, making the relationship between Ireland and the US historically significant. President Biden had extended a formal invitation to Taoiseach Harris during the UN General Assembly to mark this milestone in bilateral relations.
Despite the postponement, Taoiseach Harris will continue with his engagements in Washington DC, reaffirming the strong friendship and partnership between Ireland and the United States.
