A suspect has been apprehended in the armed robbery of a rabbi’s home at the University of Michigan during the Rosh Hashanah celebration. Police in Southfield, Michigan, confirmed the arrest of an 18-year-old individual in connection with the incident. Despite concerns, authorities stated that the robbery was not motivated by antisemitism.
The incident, occurring on the Jewish New Year, amidst heightened tensions over Israel-related protests, raised alarm in the community. The suspect, identified as Bryson Bijon Tryce, allegedly targeted the home during a Rosh Hashanah dinner hosted by Rabbi Mendy Klahr, who works at the university.
Tryce, armed with a handgun, demanded valuables from the residents but fled after being spotted. He faces charges of armed robbery and home invasion. Investigations are ongoing, with a possible additional charge to be pursued. Authorities also arrested a friend of the suspect for obstruction of justice.
Officials stressed that the incident did not appear to be driven by antisemitism. University president Santa Ono condemned the robbery, expressing solidarity with the affected community.
