Ethiopia’s parliament has approved the appointment of Taye Atske Selassie as the new president, replacing Sahle-Work Zewde, the country’s first female head of state. The largely ceremonial role holds significance in Ethiopian politics, where ultimate power rests with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Sahle-Work, who had reportedly clashed with Abiy, had served as a symbol of progress for gender equality when she was initially appointed in 2018.
Sahle-Work recently hinted at her unhappiness in a cryptic message, expressing her eagerness for the end of her term later this month. Throughout her presidency, she advocated for peace but faced criticism for not addressing gender-based violence during the civil war in Tigray. The appointment of President Taye, a seasoned diplomat with close ties to Abiy, marks a shift in leadership dynamics.
Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan now stands as Africa’s sole female head of state, following Sahle-Work’s replacement. The change in leadership raises questions about future political developments in the region.
