Talks only when Brink returns as Tshwane mayor: Zille

The DA has officially ended negotiations with its ANC partner in the Gauteng government, citing a lack of control over Gauteng deployees. This announcement comes before the special Tshwane council meeting to elect a new mayor after the DA’s Cilliers Brink was removed through an ANC-sponsored no-confidence motion.

DA’s federal chairperson Helen Zille sent a letter to ANC officials, blaming them for the collapse of talks and insisting on Brink’s reinstatement as a non-negotiable condition. Zille called out Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi for causing friction and defying national leadership, warning of repercussions throughout the country.

The two parties had been discussing stability pacts in various metros, but the DA accuses the ANC of undoing progress due to Gauteng leadership obduracy. Zille expressed disappointment in the breakdown of communication and emphasized the need for ANC national leadership to regain control in Gauteng to prevent further disintegration of metros.

The DA’s decision signals the end of cooperation, reflecting the ongoing power struggle within the Gauteng government.
