South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU) has reached its first milestone, completing 100 days since its inception in June 2024. This unique experiment in South Africa’s young democracy involves ten parties vying for control amidst high stakes.

The biggest challenge facing the new government is the country’s economic outlook, with sky-high unemployment affecting over 11 million people, especially young individuals. The rising cost of living adds to the woes of the poorest citizens struggling to make ends meet.

Trade union COSATU has called for a nationwide strike in response to the slow progress in combating joblessness and retrenchments under the new leadership. While confidence in South Africa has been rising globally, these strikes reflect the internal concerns.

Conflicts within the GNU, particularly between the ANC and DA, further complicate the path forward. While the ANC struggles to find its unified voice, the new government faces scrutiny for its performance and policy direction.

Analysts suggest that the formation of the GNU has boosted investor confidence, positively impacting South Africa’s currency and financial markets. However, the absence of substantive policy adjustments remains a key challenge as the government moves forward.
