Russian public broadcaster VGTRK hit by ‘unprecedented’ hack

Russian public broadcaster VGTRK recently experienced “malicious interference” aimed at disrupting its radio and TV programming, according to a warning issued by the state broadcaster. The media holding includes national TV channels like Rossiya-1, Rossiya-24, and online portals Vesti.ru and Smotrim.ru, operating in 53 languages.

Despite an “unprecedented hacker attack” on October 7, VGTRK reported no significant damage to its operations. While broadcasts remained unaffected, some online services, including live streams, were still impacted. Phone lines, internet, and online broadcasting were affected, with a ‘503 Service Unavailable’ error on Rossiya-1’s livestream.

In June 2022, VGTRK faced a similar cyber attack presumed to be from Ukraine, causing disruption to content servers and live streams. This incident follows a series of cyber attacks on Russian media outlets and government websites earlier in the year, coinciding with tensions with Ukraine.
