The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, revealed that Russia has stolen over 180,000 tons of Ukrainian grain through the port of Mariupol in Donetsk Oblast. By mid-2023, Russia is estimated to have taken up to 6 million metric tons of grain from occupied Ukrainian territories. The ongoing hostilities and threats to Black Sea shipping routes have further damaged Ukraine’s agriculture industry.
Despite the challenges, Ukraine managed to export nearly 100 million tons of grain from January to September, doubling the previous year’s exports. The conflict has not only affected Ukraine but also posed a threat to global food security, as Ukraine was the world’s largest wheat producer before the invasion.
In response to Russia’s actions, Kyiv opened a new trade route after Russia canceled the Black Sea grain deal. This route, initially intended as a humanitarian corridor, has now expanded into a significant trade route.
The Prosecutor General’s office announced charges against Volodymyr Saldo, the Russian-installed head of occupied Kherson, for seizing and relocating over 2,800 tons of Ukrainian grain. The conflict continues to have far-reaching consequences on Ukraine’s economy and global food security.
