Rights group: Israel killed more Gaza journalists than any conflict in 30 years

The Israeli war on Gaza has tragically resulted in the deaths of more journalists over the past year than in any other conflict in the last thirty years, as reported by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

With at least 128 media workers killed between October 2023 and October 2024, the situation marks the deadliest period for journalists since the CPJ began monitoring in 1992. Palestinian health authorities estimate the death toll to be even higher, at 175 journalists during this time frame.

Amid dire humanitarian conditions, journalists risk their lives to report from Gaza, facing bombardment, famine, and displacement. The targeting of journalists in conflicts is a violation of international law, with Israel currently facing trial for alleged violations, including the targeting of Palestinian journalists.

South Africa’s case before the International Court of Justice cites the high rate of Palestinian journalist casualties as evidence of Israel’s alleged crimes. Other conflicts, such as in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, have also seen significant journalist casualties over the years.

Prior to 2023, the CPJ documented 20 Palestinian journalists killed by Israeli forces without accountability. Despite denials of deliberate targeting, questions remain about the safety of journalists in conflict zones.
