The latest poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) reveals a significant increase in the number of Russians opting for a sober lifestyle. The survey of 1,600 adults showed that 48% of respondents are now abstaining from alcohol, a steep rise from 27% in 2004.
VCIOM attributes this shift to generational changes, anti-alcohol policies, and evolving perceptions of what is considered trendy. Interestingly, the preference for lighter alcoholic beverages like beer and wine has surged, with fewer Russians choosing vodka. Stress relief remains the top reason for drinking, consistent over the years.
Notably, alcohol consumption is no longer widely viewed as a Russian cultural tradition, marking a profound cultural transformation. In response, the government has set ambitious targets to reduce alcohol intake by 2030. This initiative aligns with efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle and combat alcohol-related health issues.
