Political thugs attack Rivers councils, state of emergency looms

Political Tension Escalates in Rivers State

Amid escalating political tension in Rivers State, armed political thugs attacked multiple local council secretariats, resulting in five feared dead and numerous gunshot injuries. The attacks, which occurred after the police vacated the premises, raised concerns of a potential state of emergency if the situation is not swiftly addressed.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressed concerns over the coordinated attacks, indicating that more local councils may be targeted for destruction. The violence has stemmed from a power struggle, with individuals mobilized to incite unrest instead of engaging in constructive governance.

President Bola Tinubu has called for restraint from Governor Fubara and other political leaders, urging them to uphold the rule of law and prevent further violence. Tinubu also directed the police to restore order and ensure the security of public institutions.

The ongoing crisis in Rivers State has resulted in casualties and widespread destruction, prompting appeals for calm and peaceful resolution from various stakeholders.

Despite the challenges, efforts are being made to establish an Election Petition Tribunal to address electoral disputes and grievances, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles and fostering peace across the nation.
