Parliament passes bill to compensate all forced sterilization victims

Good news for victims of a now-defunct eugenics law in Japan! Parliament has passed a bill allowing victims to receive compensation of up to ¥15 million, even if they did not file a lawsuit against the government for being forcibly sterilized. The bill also grants ¥5 million to spouses of victims and provides compensation to families in the event of the victim’s death.

Furthermore, victims of forced abortions will receive a one-time payment of ¥2 million. The House of Representatives also issued a formal apology to victims, acknowledging the harm caused by the implementation of eugenics policies.

This bill acknowledges the injustices suffered by victims and their families, providing some measure of relief and recognition for the pain caused by past government actions. It is a step towards reconciliation and healing for those affected by this dark chapter in Japan’s history.
