The National Women’s Council is pushing for legislation to criminalize the exploitative practice of sex for rent in Ireland. A report released by the NWC in May revealed how the housing market in Ireland has created the perfect conditions for tenants to be taken advantage of. Some landlords have been found to offer discounted or free accommodation in exchange for sexual favors.
Today, the NWC is briefing politicians at Leinster House on the urgent need for laws to address this issue before the upcoming general election. Director Orla O’Connor emphasized that the government has known about this problem for years and promised action in the Sexual Offences and Trafficking Bill.
With little hope for significant change in the housing crisis in Budget 2025, the NWC is stressing how this crisis enables the despicable practice of sex for rent. It is time for decisive action to protect vulnerable tenants and ensure their safety.
